Animal Farm
Tired and mistreated animals take over a farm, and they name it Animal Farm. Their new system – animalism is about a brotherhood of all animals. They are bound to establish justice and equality. A novella is a political satire to totalitarianism.
All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.
The most interesting part of Animal Farm for me is that you can read it
as you like. You can read it as a fable for adults where animals rebel
against Mr. Jones for not treating them right. Or you can read it in a
political sense and associate it with communism and totalitarianism. Or
you can even find the parallels with some events from history, among
them the Russian revolution and Stalinism.
At my first reading, I
was aware of the political aspects. But I deliberately read it as a
fable and didn’t think about politics and historical events. Now, the
second time I also considered this side of the plot.
The main
story is that animals on a farm rebel against their human owner because
they think Mr. Jones exploits them. They think they can run a farm on
their own.
Man is the only real enemy we have.
They are determined to handle all the work on the farm themselves and have even more food this way. Pigs that are the smartest among animals organize things. They choose a hymn and seven commandments.
At first, it seems simple, but soon it turns out everything doesn’t go according to plan.
