Normal People

I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy reading this novel. Well, in the end, I did.

Normal People is a lightweight read about Connell and Marianne and their complicated relationship. The story begins when they are in high school and continues through their college years. Throughout time, they change. But they still need each other - one way or another. Although this is an easy read, it also deals with some not so easy topics.

»Not for the first time Marianne thinks cruelty does not only hurt the victim, but the perpetrator also, and maybe more deeply and more permanently. You learn nothing very profound about yourself simply by being bullied; but by bullying someone else you learn something you can never forget.«

This novel is a good read for those who like to read about early adulthood when not all decisions you make are the right ones. So you could get a bit frustrated reading this. Also, immature characters could irritate you.

Maybe a bit overrated, and I don’t know about a »future classic« part. But I enjoyed it anyway. So I decided I would read something else from this author.
