My Brother
My Brother reads like a literary mystery/thriller. It is slow-paced and atmospheric.
After many years, Jana returns to her childhood home in SmalΓ₯nger in northern Sweden, where her twin brother Bror still lives. They are both damaged by their childhood, full of abuse.
I loved how the harsh nature shapes the mood of this novel. The weather, conditions, and landscapes are both beautiful and horrific. And so is this novel.
And even though it was difficult to read this novel, I couldn’t put it down. My Brother brings us quite heavy themes, like violence, abuse, and even incest. And that is not all. Minimal punctuation also contributes to slower reading. There are missing spaces and almost no capitals except the first character of the sentence. Even though it slowed me down at times, I liked this style.
I can’t wait for translations of Jana Kippo #2 and #3 because I am curious about what else this author and series have to offer. But this book works well also as a standalone.
