In Search of a Name

When Marjolijn was eighteen years old, she promised her grandmother that if she will ever have a son, she will name him after a relative, a family hero, who was a resistance fighter. Her grandmother also gave her his ring.

This book starts later, at the beginning of Marjolijn’s pregnancy, and it consists of unique chapters that are actually a countdown to the baby’s birth. At the beginning of this pregnancy, she learns that the child she is carrying is a boy. She investigates this story about a family hero that she will tell her son.

This short novel is an auto-fiction. It is based on the true story of the writer. We don’t learn exactly how much of the story is true and which parts are fiction. I liked the style and moral dilemma the novel presents. In Search of a Name reads like a mystery. Marjolijn is uncovering small pieces of the story and assembles them into a major one - the truth behind the famous bombing after WWII. Was her relative a true hero or a villain?
