Solo Dance
The narrator, even though we learn her name, is mostly referred to
simply as she. Born in Taiwan, but after a shocking event, to escape her
past, she moves to Japan. But like in Taiwan, she can’t accept herself
and be open about being a lesbian.
Solo Dance is quite a dark and depressing novel that includes sexual violence, homophobia, shame, mental health, suicide ideation, and even idealizing suicide.
I needed quite some time to get into the story. At first, I couldn't
feel for the narrator. But after a while, I found this novel, as a
whole, to be very good. It is full of literary references to Japanese
and Taiwanese authors that are mostly unknown to me, and I will check
them out.

This was her solo dance. And now that the dance had begun, she had to see it through to the end
